"Let thy food be thy medicine,
and thy medicine be thy food"

                 -Hippocrates

We Americans do not take our food very seriously. We buy stuff that has been in a box on a shelf for who knows how long, combine it with a drink that has about as much sugar (or artificial sweetener) as it does liquid, and call it a meal. Usually this is done in a short time in between projects that we deem to be more important than our health.

The technological age in which we live has brought us many amazing inventions. However, it has failed us in terms of our food supply. Since everything, even meat and produce, is made to have the longest shelf-life possible, the final product that we buy has few if any of the original nutrients. Sadly, most people are used to this brand of "nutrition" and don't find out until much later, after many bouts of ill health, that there is a better way.

At Sand Creek, we educate our patients on how to buy food as close to the source as possible. While we may not be able to pick all of our produce fresh or eat meat immediately after it is killed, the closer we can get to that ideal, the healthier the food we will eat. We accomplish this with community presentations, providing web resources, and with advice during visits.

One way to get started is to go to Dr. Joseph Mercola's web site and read his beginner's plan. Dr. Mercola has the largest natural health web site with over 60,000 articles on nutrition, natural health, and wellness. Of course, we haven't read all of them, so we can't give his site a blanket endorsement. But it is the best natural health web site we have found.

Another great source is the Weston A. Price Foundation. Dr. Price was an early 20th century dentist who did studies on how the nutrition of various cultures affected their health later in life. His foundation carries on his work. An enlightening article is The Dirty Secrets of Modern Food.
