Exercise
Opinions about what constitutes the best form of exercise vary
widely, but there is no questioning the benefits. They include improved cardiovascular
health, increased lung capacity, improved bone density and increased muscle tone. It is an
element of life that our ancestors were forced to do in order to survive. Modern times have
created the illusion that this is an option, but in terms of your health, it is not.
So where do you begin? Our culture has the joke about the person who makes sure to
get the parking spot closest to the entrance of their gym. If you are not currently active,
the best exercise to start with is walking. Walk wherever and whenever you can.
As you go on, you will be able to build to more of a running pace. If your joints
can't tolerate the impact of running, the elliptical machine in the gym is just as effective.
Recent research suggests that interval training (e.g. sprint, jog, sprint, jog, etc.) is the
most effective for cardiovascular health and increasing lung capacity.
